'Which Brazilian would Madam like for lunch today?' - aka 'Exposing my Inner Prude'

Who knew there was a menu!?

It's no secret that I am a bit of a prude. I like to think of it as being 'Genetically Repressed'. I come from a long line of Prude's. We find it hard to swear, show warmth, express our emotions, and definitely don't want to talk about anything to do with sex. Some of my family members don't exhibit this genetic tendency as much as others, and some of us try to hide it, but it is definitely there in my family history.

This is one of the reasons why I found it so difficult to get a Brazilian, and why it was so out of character.

It is also the reason why it was so important that I did.

I got a Brazilian when I was 28. For some reason I thought it was really important to do before I was 30. As though my body would wither up like a dried grape the moment I turned 30. I am now 32, and haven't gone back for a second one.

However... I am so glad I did. Despite the excruciating pain, and humiliating embarrassment, it put me out of my comfort zone, which was important.  And wonderful.

I find in life, I nearly always choose the predictable, conservative (easy), path. There is not necessarily anything wrong with this, but when I do something that puts me out of my comfort zone, I feel the most alive, and happiest.

I like to use my own photos on my blog posts, but for some reason couldn't find an apt photo for this post in my collection (I wonder why!), so went searching on the web. Who knew there was a whole menu of Brazilian choices? Wow, I almost feel tempted to challenge myself to try them all.

Do you find that forcing yourself out of your comfort zone is a good thing?

What is the thing you have done that has most outside your comfort zone? How did it make you feel?

Have you ever had a Brazilian? After reading my posts, do you think you would?

  2. i am a trained beauty therapist and have done many. i have had ladies on all 4's and seen it all. if you can get someone who is trained in waxing this area properly, the pain should be less. it is always going to hurt having hairs pulled out, but if you support the skin properly it helps so much. i tend to do all of my own waxing now as i cannot find anyone (except the lady who trained me) to wax with care. having all the hair removed does feel good. have you tried your underarms at all?

  4. Never! No, no, no, no, no, nooooo. After giving birth to 4 kids enough people have looked at my vagina to last me a lifetime, (TMI? hehehe). I got my legs waxed once before a trip to Bali and ended up with a red stinging rash the entire time I was away. I figure the only person that gets to see it is the hubby and he should just be bloody grateful he even gets that!

  7. I don't think I have a comfort zone? Oh wait, I do - in as much as I suffer from agoraphobia so going out of the house on my own can be challenging. I have to challenge myself on that all the time because a) if I don't it only gets harder as days pass (there have been weeks at a time when I haven't left the house at all) and b) I do start to go a bit nuts if I don't get out to see people semi-regularly!

I don't find that kind of challenge stimulating or exhilarating, just exhausting.

Nothing else is outside my comfort zone except Brazillian's. I could wax lyric about infantilising women blah-de=blah-blah, but basically for me it's just the idea of having someone mucking around in my lady-garden, and then there's the ouch factor which is causing my to clench my thighs shut even as I write this...

  8. wow- what an, um, educating post. I wonder if there are Brazilian wax spotters that go around with a card like the picture above checking them off?!

I once had my shoulders and back waxed, it didn't hurt as much as I thought it might. Though the thought of wax on sensitive areas.. ouch!

My ultimate comfort zone challenge would be anything to do with singing around people. I have no problems with public speaking but I really have no talent when it comes to music. Even thinking about it makes me sweat!

  9. I haven't, and I don't think I ever would.

After 5 kids I've had enough people poking around near my girly bits when I've given birth. It's now off limits to anyone but husband! [oh and the Dr for my Paps lol].

Just thinking about it makes me want to yel "OOOWWWWWWW!!!!" lol

  11. Hi Sannah

Well I am a beauty therapist and I had a salon in brisbane for some years
I was one of the first salons to actually offer Brazilians - we did a lot (and I mean a lot)
the full monty was what we secretly called it - but the landing strip was the most popular.
Myself and my staff all used to have them and practice continually on each other.
We were very very discreet about the whole process and at the same time made it very quick and chatted a lot to keep the clients mind off the waxing and on to what ever we chatted about at the time.

We received many referrals through our technique and I suppose got a great following too.

I think after 'doing Brazilians' for so many years - childbirth, massages and now age - there are so many things I don't have hang up's about any more as I hope I have found what is most important to worry about and what is not.
I haven't perfected it all, please, don't get me wrong - but I hope I have a comfort zone that I am ok with to blur the lines every now and then.

do you know what though - I can strip in front of a doctor or medico or beauty therapist down to nothing if I had to but I am uncomfortable getting into my swimmers with friends currently - go figure - that shows I am not currently happy with my body shape doesn't it! Or what does that really mean? :)

great post and a hilarious poster that I am forwarding on to another beauty therapy friend

  12. Oh no no no no no! I have serious issues! I'm not sure away, I can't really pinpoint why - but the answer is just a resounding "no". Probably would do me good to get out of my comfort zone as well, but I think for now me and the landing strip won't be making friends anytime soon!

  13. I did it a couple of times, the pain of getting it done wasn't nearly as annoying as the regrowth! Not something I am keen to do regularly that's for sure ;)

  14. I think I'm with you on the getting out of the comfort zone thing - I feel much more alive when I do. It was one of the things that first attracted me to my husband and I still appreciate in him - he pushes me out of my comfort zone and doesn't let me be embarrassed about the things that are unimportant. I'd love to get a brazilian just to have done it. You may have inspired me!

  15. I'm way too much of a prude, and even get a bit freaked out by the regular bikini wax! Can't imagine that I'd be brave enough for more anytime soon!

  16. Glad I came across this post today. I am very much a person of creature comforts and I should make my life more exciting by stretching out of my comfort zone. I imagine it sometimes, but don't usually do it. I just need incentive or moral support sometimes and unfortunately, hubby loves his comforts possibly more than me! And despite that blurb, a Brazilian is definitely not on my list. I couldn't be bothered with the regrowth.

  17. Again - brilliant! Pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone is an amazing thing. We don't know what we are capable of until we find ourselves in unusual situations...I read this post and had a strange flash of a comical Mummy Superhero type, all waxed and powerful, breaking free of the day to day with a Brazilian. Oh, I am tired and should be in bed so I'm just getting silly, really, but seriously, you write well out of your comfort zone.

  18. Great post and comments!

I also had my legs done before a holiday and ended up having a itchy red raised rash for the entire 10 days. Don't want to risk that on my up and unders!

  21. Having a Brazilian wax was actually in my bucket list. Just like you, I have chosen paths that are easy and safe. I made that list in order to draw me out of my comfort zone. Still, it’s a relief that a Brazilian wax is less dangerous than bungee jumping. How about we challenge ourselves with other waxes? =)
